Plan for a Safe Holiday Season
From: Donald F. Eslinger, Sheriff of Seminole County
This is the time of year when friends and families make plans for
the upcoming holidays. Family reunions and get-togethers will take place
throughout the country, with millions of people traveling away from homes
between now and New Years.
The Seminole County Sheriff's Office, and your local law enforcement agencies,
urge residents not to overlook their safely and security, especially at home.
If you expect to be away from your home for an extended period of time, or for
just a few days, you are strongly urged to establish a "House Watch" for your
property. Whether you reside in a house, manufactured home, apartment or
condominium, a House Watch will enhance your security while away.
When you call the Sheriff's Office, or your local law enforcement agency, and
request a House Watch, information will be obtained from you such as; When you
are leaving? When are you expecting to return? Does someone have a key in an
emergency? Is anyone allowed on your property while you are gone? Where can you
be contacted if necessary?; and other important information.
By calling a few days before your departure, this information can be given to
the Deputy or officer working in your area. The officer may contact you prior to
you departure to stop by and review your conditions.
While you are gone, a perimeter check of your home will be made at least once
during the day and during nighttime hours, never at the same time. Anyone
watching your community will not know when the officer will be checking. If a
concern is found, law enforcement would have the information to contact someone
to check the property.
You are also urged to contact a trusted friend or neighbor, even your
Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, and advise them of your plans.
Have someone collect your mail and newspapers to ensure your property appears
occupied. If you are planning an extended leave, make arrangements for someone
to keep up your property, such as mowing and clean up after storms.
All these tips will allow you to enjoy your trip and relax, knowing your home
and property is being cared for. By establishing a House Watch and having
neighbors checking periodically, your home will have almost round the clock
coverage.
Your law enforcement agency wishes you a Happy Holiday Season. Your safety and
security is our most important mission. Take a little time to insure that your
home and property is going to be safe and secure.
If you have any questions or need assistance with setting up a House Watch,,
please contact the Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit at 407.665.6977 or
your local law enforcement agency. Enjoy the Holiday Season.
